The Wind Singer

We went away for the weekend this week and grabbed some audiobooks from the library before we went. The one we decided on was The Wind Singer  by William Nicholson (read by Samuel West).

It was thrilling! I thought it may be too old for my 7 year old - suggested ages for the book are 9-12 years. And in parts, it was very sinister. But he coped fine with it. The story centers around two children who live in Aramanth -  a society whereby everything in your life - from the clothes you can wear, to the house you live in - is decided by your families results in an annual examination.  Citizens are motivated by the daily pledge, “I vow to strive harder, to reach higher, and in every way to seek to make tomorrow better than today”. When one of the children decides she has had enough, the story becomes an action packed, moving and well-written fantasy story, that had us on the edge of our seats several times.

An ideal companian to our long journey!
