Five in a row

Before Five in a RowSo, to start off this blog, I have been thinking about those resources I found most useful when I began to home educate. I think one of the first I found was Five in a Row.  It was this site that first clued me into the value of teaching children through literature. A good story can be very educational – creating connections in a childs mind. With Fiar a story is ‘rowed’ for five days in a row. Each day a new educational element is introduced. So perhaps on Monday you will look up the locaton of the story on a map. On Tuesday, you would talk about the relationship of the characters of the book. And so on. Some of the story books recommended by FIAR are lovely- we still go back and read some of them today. The actual process of FIAR was a different matter as far as my daughter was concerned. I could not get my daughter to sit and listen to the same story for five solid days in a row – no matter how much I cajoled!  But I still think the site is worth a look – it is full of ideas of books to read, and activities that can be done around each story. And even better – the manuals are now available from  the UK (look in the home education section).
