Science - the home education way!!

I wasn’t really planning to put up loads of craft activities on this site - but we are doing a couple of things for Halloween that I thought you might be interested in.

The first is Halloween Slime! This was posted on a home education list years ago (my apologies to the poster - I don’t remember who you are!).  I have posted this early because you need Borax for it - I got mine at the chemists - and PVA glue. There are several recipes on the web, but Steve Spangler  explains the science behind it. There are also some other great experiments and videos on the site - scroll down for the Top 10 Experiments on the right hand side.

We are also going to make some ‘apple head witches’. My friend put me onto this one (thank you, friend!).  Carefully peel an apple and carve a face into it (eye-sockets, nose and mouth). It’s better if you exaggerate the features and make them quite deep. We usually poke cloves in to act as eyes.  Stick your apple onto a stick and fasten on a cloak (paper or cloth) with an elastic band. Make your witch a hat out of black paper. Now - sit back and over the next week or so, watch your beautiful apple head witch become shrunken and hideous!! The best instructions I can find for this is at the science cafe but we don’t usually soak the head.
