We seem to have been in the car a lot lately. Luckily, we have had Anne of Green Gables
with us, and she has made it a pleasure.
We listened to unabridged versions which I downloaded from Audible (I have listed them below) but there are several versions on itunes or free from Librivox.
- Anne of Green Gables
- Anne of Avonlea
- Anne of the Island
- Anne of Windy Poplars (I haven’t found an audiobook of this, but it was written after the other books and we didn’t find it a problem to skip it.)
- Anne’s House of Dreams
- Anne of Ingleside - This book was also written later and I haven’t found this as an audiobook yet. I will update this if I find it.
- Rainbow Valley
- Rilla of Ingleside
The books, by L.M. Montgomery, are gentle and easy going but not afraid to cover hard topics - death, love, marriage and birth are all there. We have just finished Anne’s House of Dreams. I had thought that my 7 year old boy would think the books dull, but he has enjoyed the gentle humour - you get pulled into Annes life and want to know what happens next. I think each book has had us cheering aloud at some point! The books have been a breath of fresh air in our busy travelling and I would definitely recommend them.
We have just enjoyed the books in their own right, but I think they would be a good way to introduce a little geography and history. Also, the life of L.M. Montgomery was interesting and possibly a good way to introduce journaling and scrapbooks- I have put some resources below.
Other resources :
- Gubenbergs free downloadable e-book of Anne of Green Gables. Some of the other books are also available from there.
- Homeschool Estore - Downloadable guide for using Anne of Green Gables in the classroom
- Anne of Green Gables Unit Study Guide
- CBC Archives has several clips based on the life and journals of L.M. Montgomery’s life. They also have several free educational activities outlined here
- Confederation Centre - this site has some photographs of L.M. Montgomery’s personal scrapbooks that are very inspiring. It also has a section on creating a scrapbook of your own.
- Cadron Creek is a Christian curriculum that sells several resources based on the Anne books.

First I would like to say thank you for linking to my blog, hopefully we will be able to conjur up new resources for others
Now to Anne Of Green Gables, I have read some, not all of L.M.Montgomery’s books about Anne,I own all 3 video collections of the Canadian TV series , I’ve yet though to hear it by audio format, which I should imagine to be delightful, thanks for listing those that are available in that format.
As for boys enjoying Anne, I quite agree, my son loved reading the book and watched with avid interest with me the series. It does make a good useful teaching tool (history, geography etc) as well as reading, watching and now listening too, with pure pleasure.
And if you’ve not already, then do read the Emily books by L.M Montgomery? They are a pleasure to read too.

Hi CJ. I shall look out for the Emily books - I think the children will want more LM Montgomery after we have finished with Anne! Thanks for that. Julie.
