Book Review - Egyptology

We finished reading Egyptology today. This is a beautifully presented book in the form of the journal of Miss Emily Sands, who sets out to Egypt in 1926 to try to discover the whereabouts of the lost tomb of Osiris. Like a real travel journal, it contains lots of postcards, memorabilia and other surprises (in small booklets, envelopes and pockets). Some of the journal is typed, but some of it is in ’squiggly writing’ (to represent handwriting!) so parts of it were difficult to read.

The journal is packed with historical information about Ancient Egypt, Gods, Pharaohs, timelines and maps. The story and layout of the journal keeps the information interesting, giving an imaginative and informative tour of Egypt. We enjoyed it very much, and I think my daughter will keep coming back to it again and again.

My son has Mythology which is a great introduction to the Greek myths. Mythology is in book form (rather than a journal), with notes by the traveller in the margins. Whilst my son enjoyed exploring the surprises (particularly the ‘real’ piece of golden fleece!!), and reading the story revealed in the notes, the book part of it (the myths) seemed much less appealing and we did skip some pages. But it was still a great gift (thanks MJG!) and has been much enjoyed.

All of the ‘Ology’ books are beautifully presented and would make great gifts, but from a home-education standpoint, then I think Egyptology wins hands down.

Hi Julie,

I’m liking the look of the Egyptology book, I’ve put it in my Amazon wishlist I like how the layout of the book sounds, making it more like a ‘living’ book.

A quick question, I’ve noticed the link to the e-book Map Mysteries, have you used this, and what age group would you recommend if you have?
