Board Game Review - Carcassonne

To keep everyone occupied during the endless ‘2 days before christmas’ period, I presented the family with a new board game - Carcassonne. It is based on the french town famous for its unique roman and medieval fortifications, and won game of the year in 2001.

We have now played Carcassonne several times since we got it, and it has become our favourite game! The game is for 2-5 players but more players can be added using extension packs. The age range is 10+ but my 7yo managed easily. The rules do seem complex to start with and I found the time I had spent studying them (before I produced the game!) well worth it. The first game we played was more to acquaint us with the rules - but we have now got a lot better with our strategies!

The game comes with a number of tiles that players take turns to lay on the table. This builds up the game board. Each player also has 7 ‘people’ that he can place on the board as farmers, knights, monks or thieves and each earns different points.  Points are earned during the game, and a final scoring is added after the last tile has been played. The player with the most points is the winner.

One of the nice things about this game is that we have played it very co-operatively (so far!) Our normal ‘loser strop’ has been eliminated because the children just like to play - and don’t mind if they don’t win!

As mentioned, several extension packs are available for the game, and I think these will really make the game more interesting and strategic .  All in all, I think this game has been well worth the money - and I am looking forward to adding to it to keep everyone interested.
